Traces
‘Traces’ is part of the series ‘Regarding this question’ (in fact, it is the first instalment in this series!). In this series, I invite myself and others to explore a particular question. The question about traces actually consists of two closely related questions.

Do you like to leave traces of your existence?

Do you like to find traces of other people’s existence?

Before I ask others anything, I’d first like to understand what it is that interests me so much about traces. The starting point is a collection of interesting traces. I see a ‘trace’ as: something that is left behind somewhere (temporarily or permanently) when something or someone is not /no longer in that place.

Existence
In my questions, I emphasised the word ‘existence. Could the traces that interest me be saying, ‘I was here, I exist, and I want to show that’? That thought led me to a first experiment: shoe soles that leave a trace with the words ‘Ik was hier’ (I was here).
